A Call to Action – Register and Vote
Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage

Redwood City, CA –Tonight, Hillary Clinton's speech at the Democratic National Convention coincides with the anniversary of women's suffrage. Who better than Hillary Clinton, our nation’s first competitive female contender for president to remind all voters, and women, in particular, that the right to vote should not be taken for granted.

“It's hard to fathom that a mere 88 years ago, women in the United States could not vote,” said Warren Slocum, Chief Elections Officer for San Mateo County. “This year, one of the top Democratic contenders, and nearly the nominee for president, was a woman.”
Today, American women vote at a higher rate than men. In fact, 8.8 million more women than men voted in the 2004 Presidential General Election according to the U.S. Census.

On this auspicious anniversary, Slocum, reminded all potential voters, regardless of their gender, to register and vote in the upcoming Presidential General Election on November 4. The deadline to submit a voter registration form to be eligible to participate in the upcoming November Presidential General Election is October 20, fifteen days prior to the election.

What are the qualifications necessary to register to vote? The law requires that a person be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older, not deemed by a court to be mentally incompetent, and not in prison or on parole for a felony violation.

Voter registration forms are readily available at post offices, city halls, libraries, the election offices, and people can go online to the Secretary of State’s online voter registration link to sign up as well. Since an original, ink signature is required by law before the registration is final, the Secretary of State’s Office will send voters who sign up online their completed application for signature. This document must be signed and received by the San Mateo County Elections Office before the voter’s registration becomes official. Voters may call the Elections Office and request that a voter registration card be mailed to them; the number to call is (650) 312-5222.
