Write-in Candidate Filing Period Opens
Process begins for those seeking offices appearing on the November 4 ballot
Redwood City, CA –Warren Slocum, San Mateo County’s Chief Elections Officer, announced today that the filing period for write-in candidates to file nomination papers and gather signatures for offices appearing on the November 4, 2008 Presidential Election ballot begins today and will remain open through Tuesday, October 21.
Eligible persons desiring to conduct a write-in candidacy for federal, state, and local offices (with the exception of city offices) may file nomination documents at the Elections Office at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo, until 5 p.m. on October 21, 2008. Please contact the
Filing Officer, Lupe Sanchez at (650) 312-5293 or lsanchez@smcare.org to schedule an appointment.
Those interested in becoming a write-in candidate for elective city offices must file their nomination documents with the City Clerk within the same time frame. Write-in candidacy opportunities are available for the November 4 Presidential General Election for the following offices:
Federal Offices:
12th Congressional District
14th Congressional District
State Offices:
12th State Assembly District
19th State Assembly District
21st State Assembly District
11th State Senate District
School District Governing Board Offices:
Cabrillo Unified School District
Pacifica School District
Ravenswood City School District
South San Francisco Unified School District
County Office of Education Trustee Areas 4 and 7
Special Districts:
Sequoia Healthcare District
Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District Ward 7 *
*Write-in candidates for the MROSD must file their nomination papers with the clerk of the district at the district headquarters.
City Council offices:
Atherton
Colma
Daly City
East Palo Alto
Menlo Park
Pacifica
City Clerk and City Treasurer posts:
Daly City
The number of signatures necessary to file depends on the type of office sought and the number of voters in each jurisdiction.
Write-in candidates must be voters in the district or political subdivision in which they are to be voted on except for federal offices. No fee or charge shall be required of a write-in candidate except in the case of a candidate for city office, as provided in Section 10228 of the California Election Code.
