Write-In Candidate Filing Period Opens

Process begins for those seeking the Board of Supervisors position on the May 3 ballot

(Redwood City, CA) Mark Church, San Mateo County’s Chief Elections Officer, announced today, “The filing period for write-in candidates to file nomination papers and gather signatures for the Office of the Board of Supervisors in District 1 appearing on the May 3 Consolidated Local Special Election ballot will open Monday, March 7.”

Eligible persons desiring to conduct a write-in candidacy for this office can obtain nomination documents and information from the Elections Office at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo, and have until 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, to officially file the papers.  Contact Filing Officer, Megan Asmus at (650) 312-5293 or masmus@smcare.org, to schedule an appointment.

Those interested in becoming a write-in candidate for this elective office must file a Statement of Write-In Candidacy which contains the following information: the candidate’s name and residential address, a declaration stating that the candidate is a write-in candidate for the specifically named office and the date of the election. Then, the potential write-in candidate must gather the required number of signatures. The number of signatures necessary to file as a write-in candidate depends on the type of office sought and the number of voters in the jurisdiction.  In this instance, 20 signatures would be required.

Write-In candidates must be registered voters residing in the district for which they are seeking office. Write-in candidate information is not printed on the Official Ballot or included in the Official Voter Information Pamphlet.
